PARFUMS
D'ORIENT

Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris. The IMA invites visitors on an olfactory journey through the civilizations of perfume, from Antiquity to the present day. Nearly 200 historical and contemporary works displayed across more than 1,000 m². Curated by Hanna Boghanim and Agnès Carayon. Scents created by perfumer Christopher Sheldrake.

For Parfums d'Orient, I photographed perfumers in the Sultanate of Oman, in Muscat and Salalah : guardians of an ancestral knowledge, they opened to me their workshops, their souks, their gestures. These portraits extend the Guardians series into a geography of the invisible — the geography of fragrances that have travelled the trade routes of Arabia for centuries.

THE INSTALLATION

The installation offers an immersive recreation of the perfume souks, featuring seven exclusive large portraits from The Guardians series. Three of them are accompanied by audio content that immerses the visitor in the atmosphere of the workshops — voices of the perfumers, daily gestures, the noise of the souk.
